THE STORY OF HER FIRST ELECTION

BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA, Dec. 28, 2022 —The grande dame of Bloomington politics had to have an origin story.
In her new book, “1971: How We Won,” Charlotte Zietlow recounts the history of her first run for office. The memoir, released today by Penn&Ink, is a 220-page look back at the momentous election that permanently changed the politics and governance of our city.
Zietlow led a band of political newcomers, including eventual three-term mayor Frank McCloskey, to a near-sweep of the eleven elected offices of the city, ousting every incumbent except one. Zietlow, derisively called a “Ph.D. housewife” by her critics, also became the first woman president of the Bloomington city council.
The year was significant too because of the passage of the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, granting 18-year-olds the right to vote. Bloomington, in a state with off-year elections, was the first college town to be holding an election in which the amendment might make a difference. National newspapers reported the story of the local race and the impact that IU students would have on it with their new access to the franchise.
“I’ve been eager to tell this story for quite some time,” Charlotte states. “Although the times have changed, many of the concerns of the city really haven’t.”
Zietlow, who served as a Monroe County commissioner for two terms in the eighties and ran for Congress and mayor of Bloomington, is still active in local politics as an octogenarian. This isn’t even her first book; her autobiography, “Minister’s Daughter,” co-authored with Michael Glab, was published in 2019.
“1971: How We Won” is available for immediate purchase at The Book Corner, Morgenstern’s Books in Bloomington as well as Amazon and other major booksellers. Signed copies are also available. Events celebrating the book’s release will take place in January 2023. Stay tuned!
